IPv6 Deployment in European Public Authorities
28.10.2011
28.10.2011
IPv6 Deployment in European Public Authorities - working together is a one-day workshop co-organised by the EC and the EC project 6DEPLOY's IPv6 Cluster.
As the IANA pool of IPv4 addresses has been depleted in February, Regional Internet Registries around the world will soon only have IPv6 addresses to issue to their ISPs as already happened in the Asia-Pacific region last April. New Internet users will therefore increasingly be issued with IPv6-only addresses, meaning that public-facing Websites and other eGovernment services need to be enabled for IPv6 as a priority. Similarly, it will become more common to discover that information is only accessible via IPv6.
Public authorities have a responsibility to ensure both that their information is accessible via IPv6, and to make general citizens and local businesses aware about the situation.
Recent IPv6 events, such as the workshop in Ghent in December, 2010 and the Digital Agenda Assembly session in June, 2011 have shown that there is much advice to share by those public authorities that already have the experience of early trials. It is important that this exchange of best practices is continued and that new ideas can be aired.
